Master of European Studies (MEUS)
The Master of European Studies programme is a postgraduate programme designed to train graduates in political science, economics, and European law. Offered by the University of Tübingen in cooperation with the ministry of science and research. This intensive 10 month degree programme provides students with in depth knowledge of EU integration, politics, policy, and specialist knowledge in a variety of fields of the EU and prepares them to assume positions that are within or linked to the European Union and its institutions.
Programme Content
This unique programme is comprised of four parts.
Part One includes two semesters at Tübingen University. The interdisciplinary and multi-national classes are made up of a team of University of Tübingen faculty. The programme of the first semester involves three mandatory courses, one in each discipline ( European Law, Economics, Political Science). In addition students will select two further courses in their favoured disciplines. For the second semester students must choose three classes, one of each discipline. During the second semester students proceed to the Research Dissertation. This involves the writing of a 40 page (14,000 words) case study of a specific area in EU politics, policies, laws, and society.
Part Two consists of a field trip to the diverse EU institutions in Strasburg, Luxemburg, and Brussels. Students are invited to meet and talk to delegates from these institutions and contrast their theoretical knowledge with the practices of day to day EU work.
Part Three aims at providing students with in depth knowledge in the three fields of study. During the semesters the students will attend various workshops that allow for exploration, analysis, and discussion of different aspects of the European Integration with experts from the EU institutions, member-states governments, and scholars that focus on EU related issues. In addition the workshops are an opportunity for the students to meet as a group, exchange information and ideas.
Part Four consists of a EU related internship of six to eight weeks during the semester break. In cooperation with the faculty students will apply for an institution that best fits in their personal academic and career goals. The internship enables the students to switch perspectives by being part of the EU system themselves.
On completion of the four sections of the programme, graduates will formally receive the degree "Master of European Studies" from Tübingen University.
